I know not everyone likes the Facebook Timeline, but we don't have a choice. I thought I would mention a couple things that you might find interesting and useful. Specifically, I'll be covering the abilities to add items at any point in time, and browse among certain types of updates.
Add Updates Anywhere in Your Timeline
You can insert updates anywhere in your Facebook timeline. Start by selecting a year, and browsing by clicking it. You'll see Facebook has automatically added things based on other information you have entered, such as when you started/stopped at certain jobs in the past.

Once you find where you want to insert your update, move your mouse around on the line that is in the middle of the Timeline view, until your mouse cursor turns into a plus sign. Click there, and you will be presented with options to insert an update!
Browse Your Timeline By Update Type

You can use the "Activity Log" feature of your Timeline (or someone else's Timeline), to find updates of a certain type, only. Let's say yesterday, you remember clicking "Like" on someone's photo, and now you would like to find it again. Once you click to view the "Activity Log", on the upper-right will be a drop-down box that lets you select which types of updates you wish to browse. This makes it much easier to find what you seek.
